Shell, Neste to supply lower-carbon fuel for airlines

Neste’s environment-friendly fuel has the potential to reduce gas emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil jet fuels

Oil majors Shell and Neste have entered into a partnership to boost supply and production of lower-carbon fuel for the commercial aviation industry, media reports said. Neste is a Finland-based sustainable aviation fuel supplier.

The development comes after Neste inked a deal with three of the USA’s biggest airlines to supply renewable jet fuel a month ago. American Airlines, Alaska Airlines and JetBlue Airways are the three companies using 100 percent renewable low carbon gas.

Anna Mascolo, president of Shell Aviation, told the media, “To tackle climate change and reach net zero emissions, the aviation industry must act fast. “Shell Aviation aims to reduce the carbon intensity of the fuels we sell which includes selling more lower-carbon fuels like sustainable aviation fuel, over time.”

It is reported that Neste’s environment-friendly fuel has the potential to reduce gas emissions by up to 80 percent compared to fossil jet fuels in turn assisting airlines to meet their sustainability goals faster.

The global aviation industry is responsible for producing three percent of man-made CO2 emissions globally. However, the industry is planning to focus on the new framework called the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for international aviation which aims at reducing carbon emissions.

Major airlines are also committing to reduce carbon emission to half of 2005 levels by 2050. Neste’s global sustainable aviation fuel capacity is currently 100,000 tonnes. The company is aiming to produce 1.5 million tonnes or 1.9 billion litres per year by 2023.
