Apple plans to become a carbon neutral company by 2030. For this reason, the technology giant will implement measures to entirely stop using non-renewable resources from its business, products and supply chain.
It is reported that suppliers who seek to produce Apple phones or other devices will have to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
Elizabeth Jardim, Greenpeace USA’s senior corporate campaigner, told the media, “I am happy to see that Apple has worked with suppliers to source actual renewable energy and that it has not relied on low-impact solutions like offsetting or renewable energy credits.”
The company is using a robot Dave designed to collect rare earth elements from some of its devices. Those rare earth elements will be economical to carry out the recycling process.
Other plans for carbon removal or offset efforts include a fund to assist projects such as restoring mangrove ecosystems in Colombia and Savanna in Kenya. The company has also partnered with two suppliers to create a carbon-free aluminium-smelting process.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s environment chief, said that 70 percent of the company’s suppliers have vowed to use fully renewable sources of energy. A significant part of the company’s carbon neutrality plan will be achieved by cutting emissions. This process will be followed by carbon removal steps such as tree plantation and restoring habitats.
Other global corporations such as Microsoft and Amazon are also planning to achieve carbon neutrality in the coming years.
