Embraer and Widerøe collaborate to provide sustainable flying to Scandinavia

The partnership will bring Embraer’s eVTOL vehicles to Norway within the next few years

Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer announced a new partnership with Scandinavian regional carrier Widerøe to provide sustainable flying options to Scandinavia, according to media reports. This partnership will also bring Embraer’s eVTOL vehicles to Norway within the next few years. Even though it was initially designed for urban mobility, both aircraft hope to use it for zero-emissions regional connectivity.

When it comes to net-zero emissions, Norway is leading the way in the region. The country’s regional networks are particularly set to benefit from the initial sizes and ranges planned for emerging electric and hydrogen-powered aircraft, given the challenging geographic nature. Keeping in tune with this, the Scandinavian air carrier launched its dedicated sustainability branch, Widerøe Zero and it has also partnered with Embraer’s air taxi department, Eve Urban Air Mobility Solutions. This announcement was made during Transportation Day at COP26 in Glasgow and is planned to be completed by 2026.

Andreas Kollbye Aks, Chief Executive Officer at Widerøe Zero told the media, “Although initially designed for Urban Air Mobility, we expect these highly flexible vehicles to be interesting in a variety of applications also in rural areas; from cargo to passenger transportation. Our partnership with Eve is part of our plan to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation in Norway. We are looking forward to the expanded partnership, unlocking new opportunities to improve regional connectivity.”

Both the companies have been working together since 2017 when Widerøe signed an order for up to 15 of Embraer’s E190-E2 jets. At present, Widerøe will now help Embraer in performing market readiness exercises and vehicle concept studies for Scandinavia.
