The Malaysian government is planning to launch 5G telecommunication this year. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin floated a digital economy blueprint along with funds worth RM15 billion for the development of 5G networks.
Mr Muhyiddin Yassin, told the media, “This will make Malaysia one of the first in Southeast Asia to adopt 5G internet and cloud services. Under the 10-year blueprint, the digital economy is expected to contribute 22.6 percent to the country’s gross domestic product and generate over RM70 billion in domestic and foreign investments.”
It is reported that a different unit will be created for the 5G spectrum and will be operated and owned by the government, while telecommunication companies are expected to get their share. Furthermore, the 700-megahertz spectrum for 5G is divided among companies such as Altel Communications, Telekom Malaysia, Maxis, Digi.com and Axiata’s Celcom.
The Malaysian government remains open towards Chinese telecom major Huawei in its 5G ambitions. One of the country’s largest telecom majors Maxi has signed an agreement with Huawei in 2019. According to the agreement, Huawei is expected to provide hardware to Maxis for 5G which includes radio equipment, services and knowledge. The development for Huawei was its first 5G project in Malaysia.
Apart from Malaysia, other South Asian economies such as Indonesia and Singapore are also bolstering their efforts towards the 5G launch. 5G deployment has taken place in countries such as the US, the UK, Germany and others. However, Southeast and South Asian economies are yet to launch.
