Market leaders in COP26 summit announces to decarbonise international shipping by 2050

Industry leaders call for decarbinising international shipping by 2050 at COP26 This action saw a partnership between the Global Maritime Forum, the World Economic Forum, and Friends of Ocean Action.

Various industry leaders, who came together in the COP26 summit, developed a multi-stakeholder taskforce where they declared to decarbonise international shipping by 2050, according to media reports. The taskforce saw the Global Maritime Forum, the World Economic Forum, and Friends of Ocean action join hands for this purpose.

‘The Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation’ is also backed by more than 200 industry leaders and organisations representing the entire maritime value chain where they are sending a clear message saying that a total decarbonisation of the shipping industry is imminent and achievable.

It also asks governments to work together with the shipping industry to deliver the policies and investments needed in order to begin decarbonisation of the shipping industry, which will massively help the global economy.

Johannah Christensen, chief executive officer, Global Maritime Forum told the media, “With the Call to Action, leaders from across the maritime value chain send a strong signal to governments meeting in Glasgow next week that it’s time to raise ambitions and commit to fully decarbonise international shipping by 2050. If governments want to be climate heroes at COP26, they must also be climate heroes at the International Maritime Organisation, where urgent action is needed to put international shipping on a just and equitable Paris-aligned pathway.”

This call to action shows that there is a massive support from the industry to decarbonise the shipping industry and it also highlighted the many actions and commitments already made by various industries.

The signatories of COP26 are asking the government to support industrial scale zero emission shipping projects through national action and deliver policies that will make zero emission shipping the default choice by 2030.
