Masdar to establish Cirata floating photovoltaic power plant in Indonesia

The new power plant will be established on a 250-hectare plot on the 6200-hectare reservoir and is expected to power 50, 000 households upon completion

Renewable energy major Masdar will establish Indonesia’s first floating solar power plant. The company will form a joint venture for development. Furthermore, the project will be located at the Cirata reservoir in West Java and will see the development of a floating PV project known as Cirata floating photovoltaic power plant.

The joint venture will be formed with a company known as PT PJBI, a subsidiary of Indonesia’s state electricity company PT PLN. The new power plant will be established on a 250-hectare plot on the 6200-hectare reservoir and is expected to power 50, 000 house holds upon completion. In addition, the power plant will cut 214,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

The Indonesian government is planning to generate 23 percent of the country’s energy requirements from renewables by 2025 as part of the electricity infrastructure acceleration programme. The government is also mulling to setup an additional 60 floating PV plants in order to preserve precious land resources.

Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, CEO of Masdar, told the media, “The creation of this joint venture company, PMSE, will enable us to continue the exceptional progress we have made on the Cirata Floating Photovoltaic Power Plant with our development partner PT PJBI. This project marks our entry into Southeast Asia, where we see tremendous potential, given the region’s rapid economic growth and commitment to sustainable development. It also demonstrates the continuing strong relationship enjoyed between the UAE and Indonesia, and will support the transfer and exchange of knowledge between our two countries. Masdar looks forward to extend its successful collaboration and strategic partnership with PJBI and PLN to expand its presence and investments in Indonesia.”
