Nigeria topped Africa’s crude oil production in 2018: IEA

South Africa produced majority of the coal in Africa in 2018

Nigeria extracted more than 24 percent of crude oil in Africa in 2018, media reports said. The International Energy Agency (IEA) revealed statistics in its report titled ‘World Energy Balances 2020’.

It is reported that Africa produced 1,169 million tonnes of oil equivalent of energy in 2018.

West Africa contributed the highest among crude oil producers in 2018 in Africa where Nigeria extracted more than 24 percent of the commodity on the continent. Furthermore, Algeria accounted for almost 40 percent of natural gas and 18 percent of crude oil in Africa. Egypt contributed 8 percent of crude oil and 25 percent of natural gas.

Africa produces 35 percent of oil followed by 32 percent of biofuels and waste, 18 percent of natural gas and 13 percent of coal. In Africa, the energy generation is 1.4 times greater than the energy it requires.

South Africa produced the majority of coal in Africa in 2018, covering 92 percent of the coal production. Angola produced 18 percent of the country’s crude oil production making it the third biggest producer in the country.

In 2018, South Africa’s oil production also increased by 2 percent compared to the previous year. 

Africa represents 9 percent of the world’s crude production and exports 78 percent of its production. The continent exported 47 percent of its secondary oil products.

Africa has abundant natural resources and it has the potential to become one of the most powerful continents in the world.
