Nigerian banks roll out new response code system in Ghana

The new QR-based payments system is developed by Western Telecoms and Engineering

Three Nigeria-based banks: GCB Bank, Bank of Africa, and the Agriculture Development Bank have launched a new response code system in Ghana, media reports said. It is reported that other banks in Ghana such as Eco, Zenith and Fidelity are the only ones who have launched quick response services through Gh QR code for payments of goods and services.

Chief Executive of GhIPSS Mr Archie Hesse, told the media, “The banks that have started deployment and encouraged businesses to liaise with banks to have the Gh QR code installed to increase their payment options to customers. Once you find the QR Code displayed, you just have to scan and you pay or dial the USSD code and pay, it is that convenient. Gh QR is universal so anyone can use any of them, regardless of your bank.”

The new QR-based payments system is developed by Western Telecoms and Engineering, a technology company. Once the development is fully completed the banks will be able to launch the new services.

It is reported that customers only need to scan the codes displayed at various shops and other outlets with their smartphones to carry out a payment using the QR code system.

The new facility will also allow non smartphone users to carry out payments by calling a code at the merchant’s location.
The new payment method during the Covid-19 will allow people to carry out seamless cash free payments.
